A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
Stephen Sondheim - 1973
"A summer night smiles three times," an old lady tells her granddaughter. "On the young, fools, and the old." And they've all arrived for "A Weekend in the Country" on one long, sunlit, Swedish summer night.
Old flames rekindled and love affairs ignite in this farce about Desiree Armfeldt, a famous actress, and her weekend guests: an ex-lover, Fredrik, his much-younger bride, and son -- a divinity student. Desiree's designs on Fredrik are upset by her current paramour -- a very jealous count.
The hit "Send in the Clowns" and elegant waltzes drive this bittersweet comedy -- the winner of six Tony awards including best musical, script, and score. Our first Sondheim production marks the directing debut of Isaac Mizrahi, the acclaimed designer who will also create the sets and costumes. Opera Theatre Music Director Stephen Lord conducts.
The production is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International and made possible with a leadership gift from Mrs. Walter F. Brissenden and with generous support from Whitaker Foundation. Special thanks to lead corporate sponsor Centene Corporation.
